Bacton Sunday 25th March 2012 – SAMF North Norfolk Sea League ‘teams of 5′ Round 6

The final round of the 2011-2012 North Norfolk Sea League was played out at Bacton via the Castaways Holiday Park. Many thanks to Anna & Richard Hollis for their continued support and access to the beach.  With high pressure being dominant for a few days and an almost flat sea we all knew it was going to be a struggle and this proved to be the case.  After experiences of our previous match there it was decided not to peg the middle bay between the 1st and 2nd pipes but instead concentrate the sections around the two outflow pipes.  This meant that section A was west of the 2nd pipe in an unknown area to us all although whilst pegging “young” Henry mentioned he would not want to be pegged there, “too flat, no depth…” was his comment.

A fast ebbing tide with a 1 foot or so swell and good colour gave us an almost perfect sea although the on shore north to north-easterly breeze and sea mist kept the temperatures down.  From the off it was a struggle although Alan Lewis in section A did find a 30 cm pout on his first cast as did Stephen Boyce shortly afterwards in section C.  These were rather the exception than the rule as everyone waited patiently for their rod to rattle.  As the tide ebbed further flurries of activity could be seen down the stretch but much to everyone’s disgust this was shoals of pin whiting passing through.  However, Trevor Elliott in Section D did manage to find a specimen 33 cm whiting demonstrating that his usual range tactics can still do the business.

Using similar tactics Alan Doy lit up section A as he landed a sizeable bass.   A very close 36cm version but it was in as he feverishly gesticulated to those around him.  A bass which surprisingly took the 3rd heaviest round prize in the 6 match series.  As the match progressed the odd dab and flounder started to show to save many from a blank and surprisingly a 23cm turbot to Dick Ellis down in section E.  However, it was “young” Henry Randell in section A precisely where he did not want to be at pegging who started to get his act together.  He soon had a few flounders on his card and quickly overtook bass man Doy who was next to him.  He was now in pole position in the section and match but others were having none of this as Trevor Elliott found another good fish in a 28cm flounder to bring him into contention.  A similar specimen was found by Tony Thomas on next peg to Henry which slipped him into a slender leader.  Henry was having none of this and a switch to fish bait a couple of casts later saw him holding up 2 small flounders and the deciding fish in this match.  Unknown section A certainly proved to be the winning section in this match!

At the whistle it was Henry who took the honours with 1lb 5 1/3oz from 7 fish closely followed by Tony Thomas with 1lb 1 2/3oz from 5 fish.  Just 1/3oz behind was Alan Doy with his bass and small dab giving him 3rd slot with 1lb 1 1/3oz although just one fish stopped Dick Ellis (1lb 1oz) and Trevor Elliott (1lb 2/3oz) from getting in the frame.  These were individual results but it was a team match and Trevor’s Avenue Angling managed to consolidate their act at last and take a win with just 6 penalty points with section wins to Jeff Stannard, Stephen Boyce and Trevor  and 3rd places to Alan Doy and Peter Morse.  2nd Team on the day was Holt Rite Gear with 8 points and Holt Crack Offs with 10 points.

The winning team of the league was Holt Rite Gear with 47 points whose squad comprised of Dene Conway, Dick Able , Bill Beeton,  John Carter, Peter Loke, Henry Randell and Peter Simmons, congratulations to them.  The sterling performance by Avenue Angling on the day lifted them to 2nd in the league with 52 points whilst Holt Morston Creek drifted to 3rd with 55 points.  4th place was taken by fast improving Holt Crack Offs on 78 points although they did miss the first match and 5th place went to Holt Blakeney Bar on 82 points who had suffered from a seriously depleted team in a number of matches.

With the weather as it was we all knew it was going to be a grueller with just 53 sizeable fish caught weighing in at just 11½lb and it certainly was this.  Although even with the lack of fish only two team members failed to card a fish.  After the match the majority of team members adjourned to the Jolly Roger bar at Castaways for refreshments and presentation of the season’s winnings.

The league this year has been a very up and down affair with matches being very unpredictable for fish and even weather.  We had one of our best matches in the league at Cley and one of our worst at Salthouse and this one at Bacton.  Next year’s North Norfolk Sea League will be run under the Holt Sea Angling Club banner with the first match provisionally at Bacton on Sunday 14th October 2012 fishing 10:00-3:00.  Anyone wishing to enter a team in this league please contact the club.  The club will also be hosting the 2012 National Sea League Final on the weekend of 1st/2nd December 2012 where all last year’s league teams will be participating.

The next and 1st Summer club match will be at Salthouse on Sunday 15th April 2012 fishing 10:00-3:00.
