Cley Saturday 3rd November 2012 – Bumphrey Shield

With a few members on SAMF Masters duty in Liverpool and others preparing themselves for the wind, sand and rain at Gt. Yarmouth the following day a small contingent of club members met nice and early at the Cley beach car park to keep the flag flying.  With a small turnout this report will for a change be very short.  The weather was not being too good to those that turned up with a stiff South Westerly, overcast skies and a light drizzle in contrast to what was to meet club members on the following day.

With the wind off your back the sea was a flat calm with just a slight swell.  Fishing top down is usually the best for this venue and pegging was the usual stretch west from the boats.  At the off it was the usual Cley chuck for all and the regulatory lug, squid and fish bait were soon checking out the sea bed.  However, it was soon obvious that the vermin were out in force as cast after cast came in completely stripped.  When it is like this there is no chance for fish to take the bait and we need a good rough and some cold spells to drop the sea temperature and push the vermin out.  Early indications were that it was going to be a struggle and for most this was to be the case.

However, “the consultant” Allison’s (peg 1) skills came into play as he found a nice 29cm dab along with a few others early on.  Skill also was with “nearly there” Scholes (peg 5) who on familiar ground managed to find the odd dab. For the rest it was a struggle and it wasn’t until the last hour that “silver fox” Neave (peg 2), “no buddy yet” Turk (peg 3) and “no hat” Attew (peg 4) managed to find a fish.

In the end it was Ivan “the consultant” Allison who took the honours with a creditable 2lb 4 1/3oz from 8 fish.  Next was rookie Steve “nearly there” Scholes with 15 1/2oz from 5 fish followed by Andy “no buddy yet” Turk with 9 2/3oz from 2 fish.  Heaviest flat club points went to Ivan for his 29cm Dab (9 1/3oz) and there were no round fish caught.  Total number of fish caught was just 19 weighing 4lb 5oz.

This match demonstrates that we really do need some rough weather and cold temperatures to bring the fish in and push the vermin out.  Let’s hope this happens soon with a number of prestigious events on the shingle in the coming weeks.  If the dabs turn up as they did a couple of weeks ago along with the long awaited whiting then we could have some cracking matches.

The next club match is for the J Long Shield and is the 2nd Round of the North Norfolk Sea League at KELLING on SUNDAY 11TH NOVEMBER fishing 10:00-3:00.  Will all club team members please ensure they are available to fish.
