Kelling 6th February 2011

With the majority of the regulars seeking a result at the Fountain in Kent it was up to the depleted band of club diehards to take advantage of an “off your back” wind.  To say it was off your back was an understatement, more like on it, over it and at 30 mph+ it was going to make the sea flat and a casting dream.  The small band gathered at the Muckleburgh Collection parking slot to be greeted by that South Westerly wind and yes that flattish sea, full of colour and an ebbing tide just perfect for Kelling. Sky “Tight Lines” had reported that Weybourne was the place to be this weekend so were the club at last to be rewarded with a good haul.

The small group decided to peg under the cliff in front of the car park, not necessarily the favoured spot for many but at least it provided shelter from that wind.  First cast is always going to be a good indicator for the match and from the off fish were being landed by all.  The pin whiting were still there but not in the numbers of previous matches along with sizeable dabs and whiting, yes whiting! were coming in as the tide started to ebb.  This was a big tide and with the help of the wind went out a long way with a large amount of the wreck showing.

Fish were being caught throughout the session which shows how a prolonged period of a relatively flat sea can bring in the food along with the fish.  With well over 50 sizeable fish being caught  it could be said that at last the club has been rewarded with a reasonable catch.  On the day and repeating his success of the previous week, Sam “no hat” Attew took top honours with 4lb 1oz from 25 fish followed by Peter “Inspector” Morse with 2lb 11 2/3oz from 20 fish.  Just 1oz behind, the final podium place went to that man again John “silverfox” Neave with 2lb 10 2/3oz  from 25 fish who just could not find the bigger fish.

Match Result Top 2

1st  Sam Attew         25 Fish   4lb 1oz

2nd  Peter Morse      20 Fish   2lb 11 2/3oz

3rd   John Neave       25 Fish   2lb 10 2/3oz

Whilst, down at Hythe on the south coast the other club regulars were trying to show their mettle against the best match anglers from all over the country.  A fierce south westerly greeted the competitors and the previous day’s even stronger wind had given the water a good colour.  As it happened everyone found it tough even the class match anglers but our club members were able to hold their own against the best.  The only club member to feature was Tony “yoda” Thomas who made it into the top 10 of the 200 competitors in 9th place with 1.5+ kilos from 9 fish.  Winner on the day was Darren Phillips from Portsmouth way with 2.6+ kilos from 12 fish who took home a cool grand plus pools monies, well done Darren!

Back on home soil, next Sunday (13th February) is the 6th Round of the Winter Accumulator and Teams of 5 event at Kelling.  So please can all HSAC team members ensure they are there to support the club teams.  Please also note that this a Penn Clubman match for HSAC and not Penn Points match as advertised in Sea Angler.
