Holt SAC H. Mack Cup (Report)

Sunday 24th November 2019 - Kelling

Holt SAC’s H. Mack Cup match was held at KELLING via Muckleburgh Collection on SUNDAY 24TH NOVEMBER. A match that was in doubt until a good influx of Gt. Yarmouth area boys decided to wet their lines on the shingle instead of their local sand. Many thanks for your support of a match that turned out very competitive even with Gary forgetting his card, again! A good turn out of 13 considering a few of the regulars were away. Many thanks to Richard Hipperson for running the show and Bev Self for the pegging. Pegging for this one was under the small cliff towards the wreck infront of Muckleburgh Collection.

A good northerly swell during the preceding days had put nice colour into the water and with the wind switching to a light South Easterly this had flattened off the swell giving ideal Whiting conditions. All this was further helped by an overcast sky and a bit of mirky drizzle coming in half way through the match. Fishing over the bottom up on a biggish 4.7m tide meant being pushed backwards for the last 2 hours but not a problem on some decent Norfolk shingle.

At the off, everyone was optimistic of a good session given the conditions and they were soon rewarded as Dabs and Whiting were soon been recorded on all cards. For ROGER CUNNINGTON (Peg 7) he thought Christmas had come early as his first fish was a 36cm Pout worth 47 points which was one of many of this species recorded although not of this quality. For most it was targeting numbers of fish that was producing the scores and the odd big fish was a bonus and there were some of them around. After a few Dabs and Whiting a nice 43cm Bass half way through worth 80 points helped JUNE FRARY (Peg 2) bump up her total but needed more fish to be seriously in contention.

In the end it was quality and quantity with a bit of range that helped RICHARD JACOBS (Peg 19) to take the match on his very last cast with a 26cm Pout worth 18 points recording 9lb 10oz (461 pts) from 28 fish. Comprising 14 Whiting up to 33cm, 7 Pout up to 30cm, 6 Dabs and a 32cm Bass. Runner up was end peg BEV SELF (Peg 20) with 9lb 8oz from 33 fish comprising of 16 Whiting, 10 Pout up to 32cm, 6 Dabs and a Rockling. Final podium place went to the other end peg CHARLIE FRARY (Peg 1) with 8lb 7oz from 38 fish comprising 26 Dabs, 11 Whiting and 1 Pout. Plenty of fish but no bonus one or two to put him in contention.

Heaviest Flat Fish was shared with a 31cm (12oz) Flounder to ADELE SMITH Peg 10) and a 31cm (12oz) Dab to ROGER CUNNINGTON (Peg &) and Heaviest Round that 43cm (1lb 11oz) Bass to JUNE FRARY (Peg 2). Altogether 304 fish (143 Whiting, 132 Dabs, 25 Pout, 2 Bass, 1 Flounder and 1 Rockling) were recorded weighing 82lb 13oz.

A satisfactory match for most demonstrating that the Whiting are back on the shingle in daylight. Surprising the number and quality of Pouts majority from the wreck end of the stretch which is the norm and the recent sea conditions must have encouraged them out of the wreck.

Next club match is for the Nelson Shield at SALTHOUSE on SUNDAY 1ST DECEMBER fishing 10:00-3:00 HW 9:26 a.m. 4.4m. Draw on Salthouse Beach Road from 8:30. Mike Watts will be running the show for this one, thanks Mike! … Tony T
